Pittek
Beaders Project
Give a man to fish, feed him for a day,
Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.
But first you have to ask, do you want to fish?
-by Wangari Maathi
Outreach Uganda helps provide marketing, training and business support to two women’s groups in Uganda. The
Pittek group of beaders is located in Jinja Uganda and the
Rwot-tek group is located in the Kitgum area in northern Uganda, about 40 miles south of the Sudan border. Most of the women in both groups are Acholi women whose families have been displaced because of the war in the north. Many of the women and their families have also been affected by HIV/AIDS.
It is fitting that the Pittek women above are selling thousands of moonfish at the Masese port on Lake Victoria, because
YES, they do want to learn to fish, and we hope that many of you will want to help us help them do just that. Please read about our current
income-generation efforts
with these two groups of women. As time progresses, we hope that these two groups, with Outreach Uganda’s help, will be able to network and assist other Ugandan women’s groups to start on the same path towards self-sufficiency for their members.
